The Bird Market at Yuen Po Street is a replacement to the old Bird Market at Hong Lok Street. Due to the urban renewal project by the government in 1998, the old Bird Street was demolished. Nearly 100 stalls which sell birds, bird food and crafty bird cages were moved to the current location.
Keeping singing birds as pets seems to be the preferred hobby of retired men in Hong Kong. You will see the bird owners carried the birds out to have a walk by holding the handle at the bottom of the bird cage. They meet up with friends in parks or the Bird Market and hang their favorite birds in bird cages on tree and see whose birds sing louder and better.
